The four gates, in order
Each gate is a ten second look, and most days you only need one or two. One honest note first: nothing on this page removes AI watermarks, and nobody selling that can prove their tool does either. This is the part you can actually control.
Gate 1: Text
Strip the paste artifacts: smart quotes, invisible characters, stray formatting. Then do a real edit pass in your own voice and read it out loud once. If a sentence sounds like nobody you know, rewrite that sentence. You approve the final, not the AI.
Anything written with AI help. Emails, posts, captions, reports. The edit is the gate; character cleanup alone just moves the problem to a cleaner font.
Gate 2: Documents
Word: File, then Info, then Check for Issues, then Inspect Document. Remove what it finds. PDF: open Properties and check the author and original filename. And never trust a drawn black box. Real redaction deletes the text, then exports fresh.
Contracts, invoices, resumes, anything that leaves as a file. Your name, your company, and your total editing time ride along by default until you strip them.
Gate 3: Images
Turn Location off in the share sheet before photos leave your phone. Strip metadata on anything sent as a file or attachment. Skip the marker scribble over sensitive text, crop it out instead.
Photos sent by email, iMessage, or as documents. Platforms re-encode what your followers download. Your direct sends go out exactly as shot, coordinates included.
Gate 4: Receipts
Draft in a tool with version history. Save the messy pre-AI draft under its own name. Memorize one line: AI-assisted is not AI-authored, and here is my draft history.
The day a detector or a watermark check flags work you actually wrote. Receipts can't be produced after the accusation. The habit starts before you need it.
Clean a Word doc, click by click
Gate 2 is the one people skip because they've never seen where the leak lives. Here it is, once, slowly. After the first run it takes under a minute.
Work on a copy
Duplicate the file first if you want to keep comments and tracked changes for yourself. The cleaned copy is the one that travels.
File, then Info
The panel on the right already shows what your reader could see: author, last modified by, revision count, total editing time.
Check for Issues, then Inspect Document
Leave the inspection boxes checked and run it.
Remove All on what it finds
Comments, document properties, hidden text. Deletions here don't undo, which is exactly why you're working on a copy.
Save, close, reopen
File, then Info again. The panel should be close to bare. That's the version you attach.
Sending a PDF instead? One extra look
File, then Properties. Author and the original filename live there, and the filename alone can say more than you meant to.
The screenshot rule

EXIF, GPS, Content Credentials. All of it rides with the file, and a screenshot is a brand new file carrying none of it.
Survives almost anything
Invisible watermarks like SynthID live in the image itself. Crop it, compress it, screenshot it. Still there, by design.
Travel with the text
AI text watermarks live in word choice, so copy-paste carries them anywhere. A full rewrite in your own words is the one thing that changes that, and at that point the writing is yours.
