Which AI for which job, in plain terms
Free tiers exist on all three, so none of this is about paying more to get a better tool. Rough paid pricing as of Aug 9, 2026: ChatGPT's Plus plan and Gemini's AI Pro plan both land around $20 a month, Claude's Pro plan runs $17 to $20 a month depending on how you bill it. All three companies change pricing and what's included often, check the current number before you subscribe to anything.
1. Writing
ChatGPT for a fast all-around writer that also makes images in the same chat. Claude for long-form writing that has to keep sounding like you. Gemini if you already write inside Google Docs and Gmail.
All three write a solid first draft. The difference shows up on longer or repeated writing. Claude's Projects let you save your style and rules once, so every new chat already knows how you write instead of you re-explaining it. Gemini's writing help shows up right inside Docs and Gmail if you're already on Google Workspace, nothing extra to open. ChatGPT keeps writing and image generation in the same window, convenient if you need a graphic to go with the copy.
2. Research
Claude if your research is mostly reading and reasoning across your own long documents. Gemini if you want Deep Research plus NotebookLM to organize your sources in one place. ChatGPT if you want research and everyday writing on the same paid plan.
A Deep-Research-style feature now exists on the paid plan of all three, so "best for research" really means best for how you research. A stack of PDFs and reports you already have fits Claude's Projects, which keep everything loaded so it can reason across all of them at once. Gemini pairs Deep Research with NotebookLM, built specifically for organizing sources into a notebook you come back to. ChatGPT's research feature lives in the same Plus plan as everything else, one subscription instead of two.
3. Coding help
Claude if coding is a serious part of your work, Claude Code is built for it starting on the Pro plan. ChatGPT if you want a general assistant that can also run a coding agent (Codex) when you need one. Gemini if you're already in Google's developer tools, Code Assist and the Gemini CLI get higher limits on the paid tiers.
If coding is most of what you do, a dedicated coding tool tends to beat a general chat assistant that also happens to code. Claude Code ships with the Pro plan and is built for real development work. ChatGPT's Codex agent is bundled into Plus and above, useful if you want coding and everything else in one tool. Gemini's developer tools make the most sense if your team already runs on Google Cloud.
4. Images
Gemini or ChatGPT for image generation in the same chat window. Claude isn't built for this, use one of the other two.
This is the one place the three aren't equal. ChatGPT and Gemini both generate images directly in the chat, no separate app. Gemini also generates short video through Veo on the paid plans. Claude's strengths are writing, reasoning, and code, not images. If the job is "make me a picture," skip straight to ChatGPT or Gemini.
5. Everyday questions
Whichever one you already have open. The free tier of any of the three is enough for a quick, casual question.
This is the job where "which AI is best" matters least. For a fact check, a recipe substitution, or a plain question, all three free tiers handle it fine. Pick based on whichever app is already on your phone, not on features you won't use for a question this size.
6. Working with your own documents
Claude Projects if you want to upload your files once and have every new chat already know them. Gemini if your documents already live in Gmail, Docs, or Drive. ChatGPT if you'd rather upload files straight into the chat as you go.
The real question is where your documents already sit. Claude's Projects are built to hold a set of files (a course, a business, a book) so you upload once instead of every session. Gemini's paid tiers reach directly into Gmail, Docs, and Drive, so if your documents already live there, it skips the upload step entirely. ChatGPT lets you upload files straight into a chat, simplest if your documents move around and don't live in one fixed place.

Ease or luxury: how much do you want it to just work?
The dealership version: base model or the loaded one. The AI version: a simple assistant that just answers, or the deeper features and more control, even if that means more to learn.
Convenience: where do you already live?
Which tool is already built into the apps and accounts you use every day, so you're not adding one more login?
Maintenance cost: what does it cost every month?
Free tiers exist on all three. The real question is what you'll pay once the free tier runs out on the parts you actually use.
How long are you planning to keep it?
One project is different from building your workflow around it for the next year. The deeper you build in, the more it costs to switch later.
What's it worth if you switch later?
The dealership version is resale value. The AI version: if you leave this tool next year, do you take your work with you, or is it stuck inside that app?
